Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima extends along the southern bank of the Tagus River, about two kilometers from the town of Alpiarça and eleven kilometers from Santarém, the district capital.
Its history dates back to the 12th century, when, 50 years after the Treaty of Zamora (1143), the King of Portugal, D. Sancho I, signed the commendation of donation of several territories in this region to the Order of Santiago de Espada, following their heroic deeds in the conquest of Santarém.
Among the various properties was Quinta da Lagoalva, which belonged to this order for six centuries, with its first record dating back to 1193.
In 1834, Lagoalva was purchased by Henrique Teixeira de Sampayo, 1st Count of Póvoa. Between 1841 and 1842, all the assets were transferred to D. Maria Luísa Noronha de Sampayo, who, in 1846, married D. Domingos António Maria Pedro de Sousa e Holstein, 2nd Duke of Palmela, and from that time on, the assets reverted to the House of Palmela, passing by succession to their descendants up to the present day.
With 660 contiguous hectares, Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima is the largest and most emblematic – due to its historical and cultural significance – of a collection of several properties owned by the Lagoalva Group.
This group is owned by the Holstein Campilho family, led by the (six) siblings Manuel, as Chairman of the Board of Directors; Maria do Carmo; Pedro; Maria José (represented by her daughter Inês Campilho Chaves); João; and Miguel, as board members.
